Mr, XAVIER was then called and sworn. He said when he

arrived home on Tuesday evening, the 22nd April, about 5.30 p.m.,

his wife told him that I had been to the house, and what I had done!

He went the following morning to the Head of the Sanitary Depart-

ment and told him about it. Mr. Tratman told him to come back at

5.30 the see him again. Mr. Tratman asked him if there was any-

where he could hide, and he explained to him how it could be done,

Mr. Tratran told him to watch the inspector next time he went to

the premises. Ix As I was going back on Friday he told him to

get half a day's leave, and if the inspector returned to go and

report to him, Witness telephoned to his brother-in-law, Mr. Bo-

telho, to moot him outside the Seamen's Institute, The brother-in-

law met him, went home with him, and they arranged to have the af-

ternoon off to watch the inspector, and if the inspector did not

turn up they would get Monday afternoon off as well, as the in-

spector said he would either come on Friday or Monday afternoon.

On Friday afternoon, April 25th, Er. Botelho and witness were in the

house, and the latter's wife was on the verandah to see when the

inspector was coming. About 3 o'clock she saw them coming and

told them. Witness got into a wardrobe with a small hole in the

back of it, and his brother-in-law got under the bed. The inspec-

tor knocked at the door three times and witness' wife opened it

to him. His wife stood between the washhand stand and the bed so

that he could see her. The inspector stood and looked at her,

amiled at her and then went into the kitchen. His wife stood as

before. The inspector came back, took his hat off and put it with

his stick and papers on the washstand, His wife asked the inspec-

tor if he had brought the sweets, and the inspector replied that he

had not been in to town to get them. The inspector then kissed

her, put his árm round her waist, sat on the bed and drew her to-

wards him. He then unbuttoned his trousers in front. Witness
